The 19th annual Soweto Marathon will be run on the 1 November 2009. You don't have to be fit to participate - other than the standard 42.2km marathon, there's also a 20km Walk, a 10km race and a 5km Fun Run.
The marathon starts and ends at the Elkah Stadium in Soweto and the route it covers can be considered a tour of Soweto. The runners will race past the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Kliptown, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's house, and Jabulani Mall. The Soweto Marathon is one of the more lucrative road races in South Africa and the winner's pot in the past has been R1million.
